Australia Set To Stick with Johnson

Australia are likely to keep faith with struggling fast bowler Mitchell Johnson for the third Ashes Test against England, starting at Edgbaston on Thursday But Australia captain Ricky Ponting said he was planning to give the left-arm quick a different role to the one he'd played in the first two Tests. Johnson arrived in England with the reputation of being the best pace bowler currently in world cricket. But in the first two Tests of this series, Johnson has taken eight wickets for 331 runs at an expensive average of 41 apiece and conceded runs at a rate of four an over. Johnson's struggles continued during last week's tour game against Northamptonshire, where he had figures of one for 107 from 18.1 overs. He started to lose form during a poor spell with the new ball on the final afternoon of the first Test in Cardiff, where England clung on for a draw, and continued during the home side's 115-run win in the second Test - Australia's first Ashes defeat at Lord's in 75 years.

I think we made some mistakes. We have identified the areas where we made the mistakes and we will certainly make sure that our preparation next time around is really built around that. The Indian players have great flair and they play a exciting brand of cricket, something that I have really enjoyed," said Kirtsen.

Afridi Appointed as Captain

Shahid Afridi's dream of leading the Pakistan team came true as the flamboyant all-rounder was today appointed captain for the one-off Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka next month. Pakistan Cricket Board today made an announcement to this effect but there was no mention whether Afridi would continue at the helm of the country's T20 team. Afridi's appointment came as Younis Khan stepped down after leading Pakistan to the Twenty20 World Cup glory in England last month. Younis made it clear that he considered himself too old for the shortest format of the game and would not take back his decision. Afridi, who joined the touring squad for the ODI series and the T20 tie last week, had earlier made it clear that it was his lifelong ambition to lead Pakistan in atleast one international match.

Bacteria may cause inconsolable crying in babies

Colic is defined as unexplained and severe crying in an otherwise healthy infant three months old or younger, and lasts for more than three hours daily for at least three days a week. "Right now, paediatric gastroenterologists can treat just about anything that comes through the door," said J. Marc Rhoads, professor of paediatrics at The University of Texas Medical School-Houston (UTMS-H), who led the study. But "with colic, there is no evidence-based treatment we can offer. Colic can be a dangerous situation for a baby. The parent's frustration over the crying can lead to maternal frustration, post-partum depression and even thoughts of harming the baby," Rhoads added. The study pointed to an organism called Klebsiella, a normally occurring bacterium that can be found in the mouth, skin and intestines. In the study of 36 babies, half of which had colic, researchers found the bacterium and gut inflammation in the intestines. "We believe that the bacterium may be sparking an inflammatory reaction, causing the gut inflammation," said Rhoads. "Inflammation in the gut of colicky infants closely compared to levels in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Colic could prove to be a precursor to other gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease and allergic gastro-enteropathies." "During our study, we also found that the babies that didn't have colic had more types of bacteria in their intestines. The presence of more bacteria may indicate that specific bacterial species (phylotypes) are beneficial to humans," Rhoads said.

Aligarh Muslim University

The recent probe against the Vice-Chancellor (VC) P. K. Abdul Azis of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) by the Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) to form a fact finding committee on AMU has created havoc in the university. The teachers' association wants a free and fair inquiry against the VC whereas the university officials insisted there is nothing to inquire about. The teachers' association has recently passed a resolution stating the VC to resign and also welcomed the HRD Ministry's decision to form a fact finding committee. However, the media advisor of Azis, N. A. K. Durrani said the action of the teachers' association has been manipulated. The ministry officials clarified that the fact finding committee will inquire about the functioning of AMU, which includes the allegations against the VC. The committee was setup after eight members of the Executive Council including Congress leader Wasim Ahmed submitted a 450-page memorandum alleging the VC has committed financial irregularities. AMU Teachers' Association Secretary Jamshed Siddiqui has alleged that the VCs' group has indulged into 'intimidatory tactics' by pressurizing teachers to support VCs' demand for not holding the committee.

New Drug For Heart Attack Patients

There is good news for heart attack patients. Australian researchers have formulated a new drug called Dz13 that can prove really beneficial in enhancing a patient’s cardiac [pertaining to the heart.] health after surviving a heart attack. Heart attack or Myocardial Infarction (MI), as it is medically known, is a life threatening condition. Even if one survives it, the quality of life afterwards suffers a lot. Hence, the new research assumes all the more significance. Dz13 works by affecting the genes [basic, functional units of heredity, each occupying a specific place on a chromosome.] responsible for inflammation, thereby decreasing the muscle impairment following a heart attack. This in turn puts the patient on the fast track to recovery

Gujarat Government issues termination order To 95 Doctors

Taking a tough stand against the striking doctors, state government on Monday issued termination orders to 95 fourth year resident doctors. Letters of permanent termination were also given to 28 post-graduate doctors who were earlier suspended on charges of molesting nurses on Holi at NHL Municipal Medical College as a punishment for being repeat offenders. This is being seen as the strictest measure ever by this government which already surprised the medical fraternity by invoking Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against the striking doctors. The government also issued show cause notices to the first, second and third year post-graduate students, asking why they should not be terminated. A high-level meeting, headed by chief secretary D Rajagopalan, reviewed the situation on Monday. The government's action, however, further prompted the doctors to continue with the agitation. Doctors from Surat, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Rajkot arrived at BJ Medical College on Monday to express their solidarity and staged a protest.

Pregnant Women With Swine Flu

Pregnant women who get swine flu are at least four times as likely to be hospitalized as other people with the virus, a new study says. While experts don't know if pregnant women are more susceptible to swine flu, they say once pregnant women are infected, they have a higher risk of complications. Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed the first 34 U.S. cases, including 6 deaths, of swine flu in pregnant women from April to mid-June. They concluded that pregnant women suspected of having swine flu should be given Tamiflu as soon as possible, even before tests confirm the diagnosis. The experts also recommended that pregnant women be among the first in line when a vaccine is expected to be ready in the fall. The study was published online Wednesday in the medical journal, the Lancet. Like the general population, most pregnant women who get swine flu only have mild symptoms like fever and a cough, according to the World Health Organization. Denise Jamieson of the U.S. CDC, the study's lead researcher, said the agency doesn't recommend any special precautions for pregnant women to avoid catching the virus. But if pregnant women do get swine flu, Jamieson said doctors need to act fast, preferably within 48 hours of developing symptoms. "The message is don't delay appropriate treatment because she's pregnant," she said.

ISRO Decide To Study Total Solar Eclipse

Almost a week after doubts were raised about the future of India’s unmanned mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-1, following the failure of a crucial sensor on board the spacecraft, its satellite terrain mapping camera (TMC) captured the shadow of the moon on the earth’s surface during the July 22 total solar eclipse. The images were captured by the TMC onboard the 514-kg spacecraft , which is orbiting at 200 km above the lunar surface. The images were released by ISRO on Tuesday. The TMC transmitted the pictures to the space agency’s Deep Space Network at Byalalu. The high resolution images from 7.45 IST, show the lunar shadow spreading its footprint from north-eastern China to northern parts of Australia. ISRO had announced that it planned to study in detail the effects of the total solar eclipse.

IT Infrastructure

Decreased spending by businesses on IT infrastructure could be an opportunity for software vendors, according to analyst firm Gartner. In a report released July 28, Gartner analysts said they expect businesses worldwide will increase their software spending in 2010, particularly in Latin America and the Asia/Pacific region.Much of that spending will come from savings from tightened infrastructure spending—in such areas as telecommunications, PCs and networks—with businesses looking for what Gartner calls “frontier applications” that are aimed at driving innovation and giving businesses a competitive edge.“Frontier applications make major changes in business performance possible, such as leveraging the Internet for new delivery channels or using Web-based technology to improve self-service capabilities,” Gartner analyst Joanne Correia said in a statement. “Such applications are becoming increasingly essential in today’s competitive business environment.”

India Unveil First Solar Power Target

India will unveil its first solar power target as soon as September, pledging to boost ouptut from near zero to 20 gigawatts (GW) by 2020 as it firms up its national plan to fight global warming, draft documents show. The target, which would help India close the gap on solar front-runners like China, is part of an ambitious $19 billion, 30-year scheme that could could increase India's leverage in international talks for a new U.N. climate pact in December, one of several measures meant to help cut emissions. If fully implemented, solar power would be equivalent to one-eighth of India's current installed power base, helping the world's fourth-largest emitter of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions limit its heavy reliance on dirty coal and assuaging the nagging power deficit that has crimped its growth. The "National Solar Mission", yet to be formally adopted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's special panel on climate, envisages the creation of a statutory solar authority that would make it mandatory for states to buy some solar power, according to a draft of the plan, which provided detailed proposals for the first time, obtained by Reuters,

Yahoo-Microsoft

Ever since Microsoft (MSFT) made its $45 billion bid for Yahoo (YHOO) in early 2008, it was clear the software giant was serious about taking on arch-rival Google (GOOG) in the lucrative Internet search business. And now, after more than a year of more limited talks after Yahoo denied that bid, it seems Microsoft has achieved its goal. If reports of an impending deal between the companies prove true, Microsoft will emerge as the clear No. 2 player in search. In a deal that presages its departure from a market it once dominated, Yahoo will essentially scrap its own efforts to best Google in search and instead rely on Microsoft's recently debuted Bing search engine, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal and the BoomTown blog. Ads placed next to those search results would be served up not by Yahoo's ad platform, dubbed Panama, but by a Microsoft technology called AdCenter, says another report from Advertising Age. Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz "is essentially giving up on search," says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Land.

Indian Rupee Fell BY 21 paise Against Dollar

The Indian rupee today fell by 21 paise against the dollar in early trade due to strong demand for the US currency from refiners and importers amid the greenback firming against other Asian currencies. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the domestic currency was quoted at 48.37 a dollar, a fall of 21 paise over the previous close. The rupee had lost 4 paise to close at 48.16/17 against the US currency yesterday. Dealers said month-end demand from refiners and importers and firming dollar against some other Asian currencies mainly put pressure on the rupee. Expectations of capital outflows by foreign funds as stock markets may extend yesterday's losses in tandem with other weak Asian markets, also weighed on the rupee, they said. The Bombay Stock Exchange index, Sensex, yesterday ended 43.10 points down at 15,331.94.

Reserve Bank Raise GDP Growth Projection

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday kept all indicative policy rates unchanged, while raising the growth projection for gross domestic product (GDP) for 2009-10 to 6 per cent with an upward bias and inflation to 5 per cent at the end of March 2010 from 4 per cent. “We have adjusted the policy rates several times in the last ten months. Currently, the repo rate is at 4.75 per cent, the reverse repo at 3.25 per cent, and the CRR (cash reserve ratio) at 5 per cent. Consistent with our current assessment of macroeconomic and monetary conditions, we have decided to keep all these rates unchanged,” said RBI Governor D. Subbarao here while reviewing the first quarter of its Annual Policy 2009-10.As liquidity remains ample, said Dr. Subbarao, the competitive pressure on banks to reduce lending rates had increased. Consequently, the transmission of policy rate changes to bank lending rates had improved since the last Annual Policy Statement in April 2009.“As the short-term deposits contracted earlier at high rates mature and get repriced, it opens up room for banks to further reduce their lending rates,” said Dr. Subbarao after meeting bankers on Tuesday. Bankers generally welcomed the Reserve Bank’s policy stance, the Governor said.

Reliance Energy Generation Ltd.

About 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of New Delhi, along a rutted dirt track through fields of corn and barley, lies an empty plot of land where a power plant was supposed to have stood, pumping electricity to alleviate blackouts in India’s capital. Instead, there are rows of freshly planted saplings, two rusting corrugated metal sheds and a sign on one of them reading, “Reliance Energy Generation Ltd.” The plant is four years late and a victim of a corporate feud between India’s richest resident billionaires, Mukesh Ambani, 52, and his brother Anil, 50. The two split the Reliance group in 2005 following a fight for control, three years after their father and the company’s founder, Dhirubhai Ambani, died without leaving a will. The conflict has persisted with a legal spat over supply of gas from Mukesh’s company that Anil’s plant needs.

Microsoft Portable xbox System

It's no surprise Microsoft is flirting with the idea of jumping into the handheld market. While the company has found success with the Xbox 360, Microsoft has absolutely no portable presence. With all this time outside of the market, Microsoft needs to identify what kind of portable system the company's handheld Xbox will be. We told you about rumors of a Zune-Xbox-cell phone hybrid, but such an ambitious device will be expensive and alienate those who just want a portable gaming system. Microsoft executive Shane Kim recently told Kikizo that Xbox Live is the "connective tissue" that will tie together the company's devices. How that tissue is implemented into a portable device will probably be one of the biggest incentives in owning a handheld Xbox. We'd imagine this connectivity would allow for the transfer of digital media (movies, TV shows) bought on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Better yet, we'd love to see all Xbox Live Arcade games feature an "on-the-go" mode as well.

Microsoft,apple sued over TouchScreens

A company called Tsera has sued 23 electronics companies in federal court in eastern Texas for violating a patent on touchscreens. The suit, filed on July 15, cites Apple's iPod Classic and Nano products, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s Zune digital media player, and several other popular devices as violating a patent, "Methods and Apparatus for Controlling a Portable Electronic Device Using a Touchpad," which was granted in 2003. The patent offers a general description of how a user would enter commands on a touchscreen "by tracing patterns with his finger on a surface of the touchpad. No immediate visual feedback is provided as a command pattern is traced, and the user does not need to view the device to enter commands. "A microcontroller within the device matches the pattern traced by the user against a plurality of preset patterns, each of which corresponds to a predefined function or command of the device. If the pattern traced by the user is a reasonably close match to any of the preset patterns, the device performs the predefined function corresponding to the matched pattern. The touchpad replaces the numerous buttons that are typically used to control portable electronic devices, thereby enhancing usability and reducing manufacturing costs." Apple is cited for special censure, and Tsera is seeking treble damages from the company.

Mobile NUmber Portablity

Amidst all the hype about mobile number portability (MNP), which allows customers to change their operator and retain their number, this facility may not be a significant game changer in India and erode telcos’ subscriber numbers. The two companies chosen to implement MNP in India -- Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Teleco Solutions -- have told the telecom regulator Trai that less than 3 per cent of the country’s projected 550 million-plus mobile users will go in for MNP by 2010 (based on their surveys). MNP is slated to come into effect in metros and large states in September 20, 2009 and the rest of the country from March 2010. Syniverse & MNP Interconnection in their presentations to Trai have said that India is likely to have over 800 million subscribers by 2013, off which less than 30 million were likely to change their operators using the MNP provision. Syniverse will implement MNP in Northern and Western India while MNP Interconnection will provision this facility in the South and East zones of the country. Importantly, these two companies have proposed to charge customers between Rs 75 - 200 everytime they want to change their operator.Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection’s analysis comes even as data from cellular industry associations reveal that Indian operators are confronted with whooping 40 per cent annual churn rates. Telecom regulator Trai too shares the view that churn may not translate to customers opting to port their operator:

Indian Overnight cash moved On Surplus Cash

Indian overnight cash rate continued to stay tagged to the central bank's main borrowing rate of 3.25 percent on Thursday as abundant cash in the system helped banks meet their reserve needs comfortably. At 12:45 p.m., the one-day money INROND= was trading at 3.20/30 percent, unmoved from its previous close. Banks have to report their liabilities to the central bank once in two weeks and park 5 percent of their deposits with it as cash for the two weeks that follow. The cash rate is hovering around the central bank's reverse repo rate as lenders in the inter-bank market can also deploy their excess funds with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) via its daily liquidity adjustment auctions at that rate. Demand for funds used to be higher in the first week of a reporting cycle, but since early April that demand has been too little to pressurise the overnight money rates, as cash surplus in the system soared above 1 trillion rupees by then.
