Tamil New Year with all its glory is carnival of esteemed presence of newness everywhere in almost every area of life. New life, new hope, new crop teamed up with the new optimism in Tamil New Year, which is ideal for 13 or 14 day of April each year heralds new opportunity to reach new horizons in the coming times. Optimism permeates the air and reach the desired high each other with "Puthandu Vazthukal" which means Happy New Year.
The Tamil New Year starts with the promising sight of 'Kanni' which is the first dawn of the very first day of the year. The ancient tradition of looking at promising things like gold, silver, jewels, nuts, fruits, vegetables, flowers, betel leaves and coconuts ensure good luck for the coming year. Some places in Tamil Nadu also celebrate Chitthirai festival. At Tiruvadamarudur near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, a car festival held on a large scale, as is enjoyed by all.
