The Delhi Assembly witnessed a huge uproar over the proposed serving of beef during the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010. The BJP slammed Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit over the issue.
When BJP was in power in Delhi, the Delhi Assembly had passed a law in 1994, prohibiting storage and sale of beef in the capital. BJP leader Prof. V.K. Malhotra wondered why there is a need to serve beef at the Commonwealth Games, when it was not done during many international sporting events in the capital in the past.
The BJP slammed Sheila Dikshit for terming the party as "communal-minded" and asked her to retract the statement. Later, the Delhi CM had clarified that the Delhi government had no role in this, but accused the BJP of playing communal politics.
According to BJP leader VK Malhotra, Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta had informed the media that beef would be imported for the sporting event and served to athletes and officials.
