
A major fire broke out on Tuesday (March 23) in a multi-storeyed building on the busy Park street area in Kolkata with several people believed to be trapped.
The fire broke out in the Stephen Court building, situated just off Park Street in Kolkata. The building also houses the iconic Flury’s confectionery house and a large music store called Music World. The fire is said have gutted the three top-most floors of the building.
Reports suggest that atleast 25 people have been injured and rushed to the nearby SSK hospital in the city. One person was seriously injured when he jumped from one of the higher floors.
According to authorities the fire is said to have broken out in the building's elevator.
According to sources in the fire brigade, at least 15 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot with over a 100 firefighters battling the fire. The area has been cordoned off and rescue operations are on.
According to reports, the lift of the fifth and sixth floors of the building caught fire.
Smoke was billowing out from the building and the area has been cordoned off to facilitate smooth fire fighting operation.
Stephen Courts, which is an office mansion houses several hundred offices on its premises.
