Spurious drugs: stern action ordered

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday reviewed the situation arising out of the seizure of expired drugs and instructed senior officials of the Health and Police departments to take severe action against those involved in the production of spurious drugs or distribution of expired drugs.
V.K. Subburaj, Principal Secretary (Health), said under the legal amendment effected about six months ago, the guilty could be levied the penalty of a maximum of Rs. 10 lakh and life imprisonment.
The Chief Minister wanted the State Drug Control Authority to be provided with more powers and to carry out frequent sensitisation campaigns on drugs.
Mr. Karunanidhi also wanted the Police and Health departments to conduct joint raids on establishments belonging to producers of spurious drugs and sellers of expired drugs.
Meanwhile, Principal Sessions Judge P. Devadoss dismissed the anticipatory bail petitions of five persons in the case relating to the recycling of expired drugs.
The case pertains to sale of expired drugs collected from a garbage dumping yard at Kodungaiyur to medical stores after printing fake expiry dates on them.
Anticipatory bail
plea rejected
Meenakshi Sundaram, director of a health care company, Meena Health Care, and four others had applied for anticipatory bail.
When the petitions came up before the Principal Sessions Judge, the prosecution strongly objected to their release.
