Swineflu Reported In northstates

In the first case of swine flu reported from the northeastern states, a 19-year-old Manipuri woman fencer who returned from a competition in Singapore has tested positive for the disease, officials said in Imphal on Sunday. Manipur's Director for Health Services W Motilal said one of the fencers from Manipur, who returned from a sporting event in Singapore last week, later complained of uneasiness and high fever and authorities sent her blood samples to the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD), now the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in New Delhi. "The confirmation report was received Saturday and the girl was shifted to the isolation ward of the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Imphal," he told reporters here. A total of 30 Indian fencers, including five from Manipur, were in Singapore July 14 to 22. Health officials arranged for the patient's family members to undergo tests and efforts were being made to check all the passengers who arrived in Imphal along with the player by a private airline. "Manipur has intensified surveillance of swine flu with deployment of Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) comprising five to six doctors at all districts headquarters. Control rooms have been also opened in the districts as well as state headquarters," Motilal said.
