Coming out in support of the rebellious Amar Singh, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Prada on Sunday asked party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to intervene and stop personal attacks on the former general secretary from senior leaders. Flanked by three MLAs -- Madan Chauhan, Ashok Chandel and Sarvesh Kumar Singh -- and MLC Sandeep Aggarwal, Jaya Prada sang paens in favour of Singh and said he had worked selflessly for SP and had turned it into a national party from a regional outfit. She also made it clear that Singh would not resign from Rajya Sabha. Jaya Prada said during last year's Lok Sabha election, only Singh came to her defence when a personal attack was mounted against her by SP leader Azam Khan. Amar Singh had left the venue of the press conference after talking to the MLAs and other supporters minutes before it started. While attacking the party's new spokesperson Mohan Singh for demanding Amar Singh's resignation, Jaya Prada weighed her words about Mulayam and despite repeated questions as to why she and Singh did not leave the party, she did not get provoked. "I respect party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. He is like a father figure to all of us in SP and, though, I am too small a leader to speak to him directly on this matter, I urge him to intervene and stop such attacks on Amar Singh within the party," she said.
Jaya Prada also said that Lok Manch, launched by Amar Singh on Saturday, was a non-political outfit. It would work as a grassroots organisation and take up computer literacy and English education among youth, she added. She also said Singh should not be blamed for SP's alliance with Kalyan Singh. "Now, the party is blaming him for every wrong decision," she said. At one point, Jaya Prada became agitated when a personal question was asked in relation to Singh. "Even if I tie rakhi to Amar Singh, people will still talk," she said, adding that good men and women were not joining politics due to slander. "My beauty is a gift of god and so is my talent. I am a strong woman," she said, taking on the reporter for asking a personal question.
