The stage is set for the next round of talks between the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) with the latter’s general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah arriving in New Delhi on Saturday night. Muivah will meet Prime Minister Manhohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram next week to carry forward the Naga peace process which has remained stalled for over a year. The talks will begin on March 2.
Union Home Secretary G K Pillai has said that Muivah had accepted the invitation from the Government of India communicated through R S Pandey, the new interlocutor, to resume the peace dialogue. Pillai, who was in Nagaland on Saturday, said Muivah would hold discussions with Pandey ahead of meeting the Prime Minister and Home Minister. Muivah, currently based in Amsterdam, last visited India in December 2006 along with NSCN-IM chairman Isa In New Delhi, meanwhile, the NSCN-IM said it had not withdrawn its key demand of sovereignty for Nagaland and blamed the Central government for the delay in finding a solution to the six-decade-old Naga problem. “It is a pretty long time that we have been talking to the Government of India and it is high time that they took the matter seriously. In more than 10 years, they could not solve the problem, so they are responsible for that,” Muivah said.
Muivah’s statement apparently came in the wake of Home Secretary Pillai saying in Imphal on Friday that the government would not discuss any matter related to the demand of sovereignty. The Naga problem needed an “imaginative and innovative” solution which would help meet the aspirations of all the Nagas, Pillai had said.
