Separate auto CVs bikes and cars next year

He biannual Indian Auto Expo is likely to be split into an annual affair with one show for bikes and cars and another for trucks, buses and auto-parts, alternately. Besides, the auto expo would also move to a new venue as the current location—Pragati Maidan—falls short of the required infrastructure and had been termed inadequate by automobile companies. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’ (SIAM) along with other organisers will take a call on the issue in the next few days as a dozen new manufacturers are expected to join the show next time. Ford Motor India, Nissan Motor, Ducati, which were conspicuous by their absence would participate next time while international companies like French car maker Peugeot-Citroen, Malaysia’s national car maker Proton, China’s Dongfang Auto, SAIC, First Automobile Works and Chery are also keen to participate next time. SIAM director general Dilip Chenoy said: “We are exploring all options and looking to break the segment to facilitate organised participation. We may also shift the motor show out of Delhi to a bigger venue.” As per a person with knowledge of the devlopment, Gurgaon could be a possible venue. The new format would be on the lines of the German Automotive Industry which has split its motor shows to be held at Hannover (commercial vehicles) and Frankfurt (cars and bikes). Other major auto shows organised in Detroit, Tokyo, Geneva, Paris and London displays only cars. The changes follows after organisers—SIAM, Confederation of Indian Industry and Automotive Component Manufacturers’ Association faced flak from participants over mismanagement of the show. Auto Expo, which is one of the most expansive shows in terms of participation from auto companies, had a flash point on Sunday when a large number of promotional shows organised by major companies like Toyota Motors and Honda Motor Company were stopped by the Delhi police.
Major companies Maruti Suzuki, Hero Honda, Hyundai Motor India and Toyota Motor have raised doubts on the viability of the Auto Expo. “We need to facelift the entire infrastructure as the number of participating companies are bound to grow and the current facility falls short,” Hyundai Motor India director (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena said. Meanwhile, as an initial step on alternate motor show, SIAM along with other organisers would organise a bus and special vehicle motor show in Bangalore in 2011.
