Miniature Schnauzer Dog Breed Profile

The Miniature Schnauzer is a strongly built dog, ranging from 12 to 14 inches height. Both sexes weigh from 13 to 15 pounds. This is a very square looking dog with a large head and powerful jaws. Ears and tail are usually cropped. Mini Schnauzer has a hard outer coat with undercoat which is soft. The usual coat colors Schnauzer is salt and pepper, black, black and silver, and occasionally white.

History: The Miniature Schnauzer originated in Germany in the late 19th century. Crossing the Standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher and Miniature Pinscher Miniature Schnauzer produced. These active dogs were used to hunt rats and other pests on farms and were able to follow their prey in cramped conditions. Mini Schnauzer was also served as guard dogs for families and livestock. They are aware of guard dogs and will not hesitate to bark when they think something is wrong.

Temperament: The Miniature Schnauzer is an energetic, active dog who loves to play. This dog is very attentive, but should not be too aggressive. The Schnauzer should learn to socialize with other dogs, while young, as they tend to be dominant with them otherwise. My Schnauzer is easy to train, but has a "high prey drive", which must be addressed if other pets are present in the house. The Miniature Schnauzer is good with children and enjoys the company of their families.

Health Issues: Usually the Miniature Schnauzer is a relatively healthy breed of dog. You can be the subject of cataracts and retinal atrophy, both of which can lead to blindness. If the fat in the blood rise too high, they can get pancreatitis. Mini Schnauzers can develop diabetes, cysts, and von Willebrand's disease (a type of haemophilia). Diabetes and pancreatitis can be prevented in part by looking at the dog's diet, so it does not become overweight. A low-fat dog food is probably appropriate for this race.

Grooming: The Miniature Schnauzer needs to have his coat stripped twice a year, at least. In addition, it is a good idea to brush the dog every week to keep hair becomes entangled. The eyebrows, beard and mustache should be combed to keep them from tangling, and can be trimmed to keep them nicer. It is a good idea to clean facial hair with a damp cloth after the dog has eaten. The ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection. Since the teeth are exposed to decay, brushing each week is a good idea. Be aware that human toothpaste can be toxic to the Schnauzer, and use one designed for dogs.

Living Conditions: The Miniature Schnauzer is a very good indoor dog and will be happy in either a house or apartment. This dog is strongly linked to family and mental benefits from being with them. Mini Schnauzer is playful and lively and needs daily exercise, preferably a long walk. This dog does not sleep.
