Almost all age groups were present and they didn't mind the long walk towards Eden in sweltering conditions. They also braved the frisking at numerous points with a smile on their lips. The other thing in common was they weren't there for cricket. It was to savour the IPL atmosphere, complete with its sights, sounds and Shah Rukh Khan.
“I am not a cricket fan…don't even watch it on TV, although my husband does,” said Somdatta Chatterjee, a homemaker. “But I like the IPL for the colour it provides. This is my first day at the ground and I love the atmosphere. I think I'll be back again,” she said.
It was the same for Priyanka, sporting a KKR shirt with Khan printed on its back. The college student was also a first-timer and with a Club House lower tier ticket, she was lucky to catch a glimpse of King Khan from a distance. “My day has been made. This is what I had come for. I don't mind spending Rs 6,500 for this ticket.
Does this mean that cricket is getting popular amongst women through the IPL? Bela Dutta thought so. “You can say I’m an example. I have been coming to the ground since the first edition, mainly for my kids. But beyond the glamour and vibrant ambience, I have started liking the game too.”
