Maha govt security to JJ hospital doctors

Protesting resident doctors and nursing staff of the government-run JJ hospital agreed to carry on their duties after Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) today assured full protection and security to them."The Maharashtra government has assured full security to the doctors and paramedical staff (of JJ hospital) by recruiting around 90 more security personnel, in addition to the current 60," joint director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) NN Ambhore and the dean of JJ hospital, RS Inamdar said.

"Police personnel will be deployed in all the wards for today and tomorrow. But the final decision on the issue of recruiting extra security personnel is expected to be taken on Monday with the health secretary and DMER director," Ambhore said.

However, agitating doctors went back to their duties after the hospital authorities and DMER gave the assurance in writing, a Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) representative said.

The doctors and paramedical staff today held protests outside the dean's office this morning, following assault on a colleague by relatives of a patient who died yesterday. The incident took place last night when one Sayed, who was being treated at the hospital, died, following which his relatives manhandled Dr Prashant Bhand, alleging negligence on his part. They subsequently ransacked a hospital ward, police said.

Earlier, demanding "basic security and complete protection", protesting doctors and nurses said that JJ being an important hospital, where large number of emergency cases come on a daily basis, the staff should be given adequate protection to carry on their work peacefully.

"All the emergency cases are attended by the resident doctors, and they need to be shielded from such kind of attacks," a MARD representative said. Two persons — Feroze Abdul and Habib Mobin — were arrested last night in connection with the incident, police said.
