The precious two drops of polio vaccine were adminstered to -- children on the first day of the National Polio Immunisation programmein the state on Sunday. Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa inaugurated the programme. State project director (reproductive and child health) Dr M R Mohan Raj said: "The vaccination was smooth across the state. Some of the districts that have shown low percentage will be covered in the next two days through a door-to-door immunization programme." While in most districts the coverage was above 80 per cent, northern ones like Bijapur and Bidar recorded just 68.61% and 69.86% coverage respectively. In Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural and BBMP area, it was 83.89%, 84.23% and 83.12% respectively. A weeklong awareness programme on significance of the programme encouraged parents to participate in the drive drive on Sunday. By noon, around 150 babies had been vaccinated at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital. Sridhar from Balipete got his two-and-a-half-year-old child immunized. "My brother is being treated at Bowring. So, along with visting him, we also got our child vaccinated."
However, Sumith from Rest House Road found it difficult to spot a booth and had to visit a nearby government hospital. "There are polio awareness banners everywhere, but no helpline to guide us to a booth," said Sumith. The drive for children aged below 5 years began at 8 am and ended at 5 pm. Almost 1 lakh personnel have been deputed from various departments for successful implementation of the programme. On Sunday, 31,010 booths, 48,995 teams and 97,110 vaccinators were available for the drive across the state.
