Madurai Mariamman Theppakulam Theppathiruvila



Description: One of the major festivals in Madurai. Held in the large tank (theppakulam) built by King Tirumalai Nayak with an island in the middle, which is fed by underground channels from Viagai river. The idols of Madurai Meenakshi temple Sundeswara brought to the tank and taken around in a beautifully decorated float. In the evening the scene is very colorful and fascinating with the island, tank and surface lit up and with a display of fireworks. This festival is also well attended celebrated in the Tamil month Thai (January-February) on poosam star days. This tank is familiar known as Madurai theppakulam, theppa thiruvila, Mariamman theppakulam & vandiyur theppakulam. Tirumalai Nayak took mukkurini vinayagar statue here and created this statue in meenakshi Amman temple.
