Government under attack from Chinese hackers

A team of cyber security experts have found that a Chinese hacker group is targeting Indian government and has accessed some classified information.

Cyber warfare has become a strong tool for the Chinese military and it is accused of using hackers to attack and access information form countries like US, UK, India and Germany. China is believed to be following a Cyber Warfare Doctrine that aims to achieve electronic dominance by 2050 rivaling the US.

China is spending $55 million a year and has allegedly commissioned 10,000 hackers who repeatedly attack systems in different countries including institutions like the Dalai Lama's office and the United Nations.

As the network of hackers is uncovered there is more information about their targets. The hackers have been trying to hack into the systems of the Commonwealth games to be held in India later this year.

They were aiming at crashing down the system including ticketing by affecting IT infrastructure during the opening ceremony. Security agencies say that they were studying weaknesses in the system possible to plan attacks.

India has come under attack from the Chinese hackers repeatedly. In 2008 and also in 2009 the computers of Ministry of External Affairs came under attack from the hackers.

The report said it found Indian diplomatic correspondence files which were accessed by the hackers in China. The affected institutions ranges form the National Security Council Secretariat to Army units to Air Force offices and even embassies in other countries.

The hackers may also have access to India's surface-to-air missiles systems, which raises concerns over the security systems in place and demands more effective cyber policy.
