Ways to Eliminate Debt

Debt is a problem that can get out of control if not taken care of properly. As debt is allowed to grow, a person's ability to pay it down is considerably more difficult.

While it is true that making minimum monthly payments will eventually lead to a debt free life, debt can be removed much faster if one person pays more than the minimum required amount. The difference can be thousands of dollars saved over the life of balance. This is especially true for credit cards, which traditionally takes higher interest rates than other loans. A method of debt elimination, which avails itself of this principle is called "The Snowball Method for Debt Elimination". More in debt discussion of this method is available online, but the basic principal is quite simple:

To begin, would a person make a list of their debts, the lowest debt on top, the highest debt at the bottom. Pay no attention to the interest rates. Only concern yourself with debt ranking from lowest to highest. Then be sure to pay the minimum monthly payment for each debt, except for the smallest that should be top of your list. For the smallest debt, pay the minimum monthly payment plus whatever else you can scrape up. Once the first debt is paid, the other debts will be focused on. The other debt will be paid the usual minimum balance plus what ever money you have saved since shut off your debt first. This is money that a person is already willing to live without, so what better place to put that money than right back into debt. This method uses psychological reinforcements to ensure the debt is paid. While it is true that paying off debt at the highest rate to lowest would be more profitable in the longer term, the psychological strength that can come from being able to see a pile of debt get lower and lower, will contribute to make sure that a person with even the smallest amount of discipline can have a better chance of being debt free than one person pays their debt at interest rates.

Debt consolidation is another popular method of debt elimination. Consolidation allows a person to gather up all their debt to a balance and pay the debt with a simple monthly payment. It is a great solution for people who have trouble keeping track of their bills and expenses. By only having to worry about a debt account each month one person will be able to budget even better and take care of their debt faster. This is another method which is highly dependent on the power of psychology. In reality, there is no difference between paying $ 100 for 5 accounts a month or $ 100 for a single account each month, but there is something else in the way the mind perceives the number of accounts and that should send a check instead of five is something that most people in debt recovery can appreciate. Making a program easy to follow the first step is to design a program that people want to follow.

While several methods of debt elimination are the two outlined above are perhaps two, which is the easiest for debtors to implement with the least amount of help, while in the fastest possible way.
