A 28-year old woman, arrested on charges of cheating, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in a detention room at the Goregaon police station on Friday. The incident gave the police the blushes as they had to admit that no one was guarding the woman when she took the extreme step.
Swapna Salvi was allegedly involved in a credit card cheating case. She was arrested by the Gujarat police on Wednesday, and was brought to the Goregaon police station on Thursday.
Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police, North West region, said, “Salvi had been kept in the detention room for questioning. The woman police officials who were with her in the room had stepped out for some work.
“When they returned after a short while, they found Salvi hanging from the ceiling fan. She used her dupatta to hang herself.” Salvi was rushed to the Bhagwati Hospital, but was declared dead before admission.
Salvi had been arrested for duping a person of Rs1.9 lakh. She withdrew the money by using his credit card in Ahmedabad. Posing as a bank official, she had told the victim that she would get him a Platinum credit card in place of his Gold card. Believing her, the man gave her his credit card.
The police said that Salvi had worked as a credit card agent with a bank, and knew about credit cards. The victim registered a complaint at the Goregaon police station after he came to know that money had been withdrawn from his card account.
Salvi, a resident of Kurar village in Malad, stayed in a joint family with six siblings, mother and step mother. When contacted, Salvi’s family members refused to talk. But a neighbour said, “She was a very nice girl and always looked acheerful. We saw her going to office everyday. It is hard to believe that someone like her could be involved in criminal activities.”
