Description:
Our guide describes the north tower(gopuram) at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. Gods, demons, beasts and heroes are found all over the tower. There are 12 massive gopurams in the temple, the four highest gopurams on the outer walls (the highest is the south gopuram, measuring 49 meters). There are four entrances. The main entrance is the Meenakshi Amman shrine. Ashta Shakthi Mandapam is reached from the east gate. It was built by Thirumalai Nayakar wives Rudrapathi Ammal and Tholimamai. The scenes from Thiruvilayadals of the Lord and from Meenakshi Amman life as a princess is depicted on the pillars of this mandapam. The golden lotus pond (Potraamarai Kulam) is located to the left of the Meenakshi shrine. The Tamil Sangam is used to value the literary works by placing them in the waters of this tank.Only those works which rose to the surface again was accepted as a great masterpieces.Tiruvalluvar's Tirukkural accepted on this pond.
