History of Bollywood

On 7 July 1896 is a landmark in the history of Indian cinema. This was the first time a film was shown in India. It took several years and then in 1913 Dadasaheb Phalke made Raja Harishchandra was the first Indian film to be made. It was 3700 meters long and was based on the Mahabharata. The film was black and white with no sound at first. Then came the movie with sound. Alam Ara was the first film with sound and was released in 1931. This film was a super hit.

Then came film in color. This happened first in the late 1950s. Colors produced in tremendous growth in this industry. It was a time when musicals and melodrama were seen everywhere. Stars as Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand each created a brand for themselves. 1960s and 1970s brought into action movies and stars like Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna who was known as action heroes. Another milestone in Indian film industry took place in 1975, and it was the launch of 70mm film. Sholay for the first film to be released as a 70mm film made, AOT makes good business during the first week. The film was a big block buster then as slowly slowly people went to see the film. 1980s heroes were more bloodthirsty and each film had the famous dialogue Äúkuttey main tera Khoon pee jaunga, AU. It was the time when Amitabh Bachchan was known as the angry young man.

By the end of the century all viewers wanted to see was the family drama and comedy films. This was when movies like Hum Hain és Kauns and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was sky rocketing business. This film had formulas that were technically wrong, but they were the biggest blockbusters in their times. These films were extra long, had twelve to thirteen song and dance sequences and had very very simple stories. But these films worked because the stories were very real, and the movie had lots of emotions to show. People laughed and cried and enjoyed these movies at the same time.

Now in the current era, the latest trend is to restore. Many directors do a remake of the big hits from the past. Some recent publications have been Devdas, Don and Umrao Jaan. People have been fastidious, and it is not easy to predict which films will be a hit and flop. The audience is looking for creativity and new thoughts and ideas. It has opened up the movie making business to whole new world of filmmaking.

A lot of new directors are now getting a chance to show the world their various and modern stories. These instructors are not afraid to experiment. Higher the risk, the greater the yield. Each director is now ready to show the world the latest in relationships. Whether its a divorce or are living in relationships nothing is a taboo in those days.

During the 70s and 80s kissing scenes were considered cheap and publicity stunts. Today, kissing is too common in everyday life, and audiences have agreed to kiss as usual. But in the last three years hottest sensation has been smooching scenes. Some movies where this has been handled very mature, has been accepted by the audience, but where it is set right cheap viewers also have rejected it.

In India to keep a certain amount of control on the film makes the censor board is very active. Board members are both male and female. Each film has to have a certificate from the board before the movie is released. If so, as a U / A rating it’s open for the viewer ship of all, but if an A-rating then it’s only for viewers 18 and older.

Movies in India are made in both large and small scale. There are the big production houses and then there are small budget filmmakers. Films from production houses such as Johan, Ash Raj, Mukta arts and Kapoor are usually very large budget films. Some of the most expensive film in Bollywood is Dhoom 2, Don and top of the list is Devdas with a grand budget of 100 crores. There are other films like Equal, Has Aaron Khwaishain aisle, etc. Whether a film is big or small it is to be judged by viewers. The audience is discerning and the number of hits in a year has now gone down.

The previous year 2005 was a bad year for the industry. Most of the film bombed at the box office. The public was tired of seeing movies that have been copied from some Hollywood movie or a remake of some regional films. 2006 came as a breath of fresh air. The year started with Aamir, as spell and ended with Hritik, as talent.

A year when every movie that came tried to do better than its predecessor. A year filled with dancing and foot tapping music. A year filled with romance, suspense, action, drama and comedy. So now can see what all this year has given us.
