Bose Methodology Conforms To Venerable KISS adage

Streaming music from a computer to a home sound system is old hat, but many consumers have been intimidated and bedeviled by the requirements of the connections, whether through a wireless network, a wired Ethernet cable setup, or some other complex configuration. But at Bose, methodology conforms to the venerable KISS adage: keep it simple, stupid. In concept, the company’s new SoundLink wireless system is a no-brainer. We have not tried one nor heard it, so a thorough test is in order when the device ships in late August. The idea, however, is that a speaker box, which looks much like the Bose SoundDock system for iPods, receives a wireless signal from a transmitter that plugs directly into the computer’s U.S.B. port. Bose says the link is “long-range” and works “through most walls and floors.” We’ll see about that. SoundLink isn’t bargain basement. It’s $550, but it does have a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery pack that’s supposed to power the speakers for up to three hours. Of course, it’ll plug into an AC outlet as well, and there’s a mini-jack to directly connect an audio source.
