Gujarat Government issues termination order To 95 Doctors

Taking a tough stand against the striking doctors, state government on Monday issued termination orders to 95 fourth year resident doctors. Letters of permanent termination were also given to 28 post-graduate doctors who were earlier suspended on charges of molesting nurses on Holi at NHL Municipal Medical College as a punishment for being repeat offenders. This is being seen as the strictest measure ever by this government which already surprised the medical fraternity by invoking Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against the striking doctors. The government also issued show cause notices to the first, second and third year post-graduate students, asking why they should not be terminated. A high-level meeting, headed by chief secretary D Rajagopalan, reviewed the situation on Monday. The government's action, however, further prompted the doctors to continue with the agitation. Doctors from Surat, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Rajkot arrived at BJ Medical College on Monday to express their solidarity and staged a protest.
