The rift between the saffron alliance, Shiv Sena and the BJP, in Maharashtra widened on Monday with both parties trying to shut the other on the Marathi manoos and migrants issue.
Reacting to Sena’s repeated unrestrained expressions, criticising the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Mukesh Ambani and Shahrukh Khan over the last few days, BJP’s parent body RSS’s chief Mohan Bhagwat and leaders like Ram Madhav asserted that Mumbai was for all Indians and RSS would protect north Indians in Maharashtra.
Reacting to RSS statements about protecting north Indians in Mumbai, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray asked the Sangh not to meddle in the issue. “Nobody should teach us what we have to do. Ram Madhav should worry about south Indian states and teach Hindi in those states,” said Uddhav.
Responding to Bhagwat’s remarks, senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi had said on Sunday, “The time has come to remind RSS that Mumbai belongs to Marathi manoos only.” BJP president Nitin Gadkari was quick to condemn Shiv Sena’s divisive politics despite the two parties being old allies and repeated RSS’s stand that all Indians have the right to live anywhere.
“It has been the consistent stand of the BJP and the RSS that all Indians have the right to reside in any part of India as BJP also recognises the importance of linguistic and regional identities,” said Gadkari.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders said that Sena was compelled to stand by its Marathi manoos plank to neutralise Raj Thackeray, who has been hogging the limelight over the migrant issues, and BJP, a national party, was compelled to speak about national interest.
“Possibly the partners for over two decades are heading towards a collision course,” said a senior Congress leader.
