The big challenge Dinesh Karthik envisaged came early on the opening day of South Zone's Duleep Trophy final against West Zone, and he deserved much better than the stony silence - save the cheers of his mates - when he hit an unbeaten 161 (277m, 188b, 23x4) on Tuesday. The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium was out of bounds for spectators and the South Zone skipper had only his team to play for after winning the toss and walking to the wicket in the 23rd over with his side tsruggling on 76 for three. Irfan Pathan had by then used the conditions well to make early inroads, getting the ball to shape up nicely to trap KB Pawan in front to the first ball he faced, and forcing S Anirudha to edge one that got away after the opener started the proceedings with a first ball boundary.
