Forbes names Chicago among most miserable cities in US

Long commute and the highest tax in the United States, Chicago has landed on the Forbes list of America's most miserable cities, which also names Detroit and New York.

Cleveland, Ohio at the top of Forbes list of the most miserable city in America because of its brutal winter, high crime and a tortured sports history.

Residents of the "mistake by the lake" the city has begun to vote with their feet, hoping to find better conditions elsewhere. The net migration out of the metro area was 71,000 in the past five years, Forbes said.

"Cleveland takes top spot in our third annual ranking, thanks to the high unemployment, high taxes, lousy weather, bribery of officials and crummy sports teams," Forbes said.

Chicago ranks number 10 on the list of 20 cities.

"Major problems are the nation's highest sales tax rate of 10 percent and 25 long commute," Forbes said.

Forbes Misery measure 'took into account unemployment, sales and income taxes, commute times, violent crime, weather and how the city's pro sports teams have fared over the past two years.

The magazine also considered based on corruption convictions of public officials in each area, as tracked by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The second most miserable city in the U.S. is Stockton, California, since its violent crime and "jarring unemployment", which is expected to average 18.5 percent in urban area in years.

The city is followed by Memphis, Tennessee and Detroit, Michigan.

The list also includes the Sacramento, California and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
