India coach Jose Brasa, who has expressed his worries about the team’s basics like passing and trapping in the past, would be hoping the outfit does above par in the coming days. For, though the home side beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a practice game here on Thursday, they were found wanting in these very basics on the practice turf at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium.
The Dutch seemed to be holding back a little, even though they did not fight shy of contesting certain calls by the umpire. They were content moving the ball around from the centre, testing their moves rather than looking for goals.
The Indians had the satisfaction of going ahead through Prabhjot Singh on a cross from the right in the fifth minute and eventually getting the deciding goal in the 25th through Deepak Thakur.
In between, Taeke Takema cracked one to get the equaliser in the 15th minute. The man who is seen as carrying on the legacy of Floris jan Bovelander, did not take a hit on the second penalty-corner that his team got during the goal-less second session, which was watched intently by India’s former coaching consultant Ric Charlesworth.
India had earlier on Tuesday beaten Argentina 2-1, who like the Dutch, are not in India’s pool B. India start their campaign in the World Cup with a match against Pakistan on February 28.
