Many times in our more than twenty years as a personal trainer, we have seen clients make great progress to follow the customized eating plan we give them only to rest on our laurels and fall back into the unhealthy eating habits that brought them to the point of desperation. The question is how we maintain the mindset that created success in weight loss. The answer is that we must unswervingly focus on the ultimate goal, we created when we started the program. Say a customer comes to us, which weighs two-one hundred and fifty pounds, and he wants to take his weight down to two hundred pounds. The customer, in order to remain motivated, must constantly reaffirm the commitment he originally made to drop his weight to two hundred pounds.
I firmly believe in using weight loss associated mantras to keep himself motivated. The question is, what is a mantra? A mantra is a constantly repeated proverb, which will confirm the client's objectives before the mantra becomes a part of the client's belief system. Is this brainwashing? Maybe, but for thousands of years this has been a method that has been used in religion and education to form belief systems and Ingrain powerful and useful truths. In their spare time, I instruct our clients to constantly repeat the success mantra until it becomes as a part of them, nothing could stop them from achieving their weight loss goals.
Another effect technique involves obtaining an image of a body which is representative of what the client's ultimate goal is in appearance. Each day that the image has to be seen, and I instruct the customer to spend half an hour to create a mental picture of themselves with this objective body. This technique is called visualization and when practiced with regularity will never fail to support the struggle to remain motivated.
To achieve success in their training program, it is necessary for the client to devote himself altogether to reach their goals. Success only comes when a person who dedicates himself wholeheartedly into the pursuit of their goals. No negative self talk can be tolerated, examples of this would be "I could never go more than two weeks at a weight loss diet," or "we will always be fat," statements like these are exactly the opposite of success mantra, which is described earlier in this article. Success mantras, if practiced diligently, will block out negative self talk. Negative self talk is the number one enemy of program success and must be overcome by careful practice of the techniques mentioned earlier in this article.
Success is a security if motivation is maintained, and we hope that the motivational techniques that are mentioned in this article will enable you to achieve success with your weight loss endeavor.
