
Meaning and rituals to perform Pitra Paksha Shraadh
It is believed that the subtle bodies of our ancestors (Pitra) reside in the Lord Yama's region (Yamalok) and reach the ground in greater proportions during the full moon night (poornima) of Chaturmas. Therefore, Hindus believe this ritual for 15 days to be ideal to perform rites for ancestors, believing that in this period, subtle bodies of deceased ancestors from Yamalok to visit their relatives on the ground. So if the ritual of shraadh performed on one of the days during this two weeks, so the subtle bodies of deceased ancestors still happy for the rest of the year.
Pitra Paksha Shraadh, the annual ceremonies and rituals conducted for The Departed souls of dead ancestors with their friends and relatives in Pitra Paksha (dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha) in the month of Ashwin (September-October) is of great importance in Hindu religion. It is believed that the souls will attain peace by Shraadh rituals performed during the fortnight.
In 2009, Shraadh Pitra Paksha fall during September 4th (full moon night) and 18 September.
According to Hindu mythology, performed during Shraadh Ashwin Pitra Paksha when ancestors immediately and their souls rest in peace. It is believed by Hindus that all the sinful acts committed by the dead will be cleansed by the shraadh. Those blessed souls who do not receive shraadh said to wander aimlessly on the ground.
Pitra Paksha Shraadh also offered by people to ancestors, whose death date they have forgotten or to the relatives who had no children, and who met with violent death as an accident or murder. The people who fail to perform the annual shraadh (performed at death date) may also offer Shraadh during this period.
Rituals performed in Shraadh
Rituals Shraadh should always be performed under the guidance of a learned person or priest. During the period Shraadh, the relatives of the deceased is suggested that vegetarian food as vegetables, proteins, less food, and should avoid non vegetarian food. Son of the deceased (known as karta) comply with various rituals, including sending the invitation to Brahmin in this day and perform all the rituals as the way to express her heartfelt thanks and gratitude to his ancestors. The karta offer food to the deserving Brahmin (particularly liked the ancestors), and treat them with all hospitality and final means "Pinda Pradaana". This whole ceremony is conducted at a sacred place as the margin of a sacred river.
