Mohd Arif from Peshawar, Pakistan, who was suffering from debilitating Parkinson’s disease, is a happy man today, as neurospecialists at the Apollo Speciality Hospital here treated him successfully using Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedure last week.
He was a well-travelled man and had a textile business till the onset of the degenerative disease. Following the treatment, he has shown some 70 per cent improvement.
His son Arif said: “For the past five years, my father was under medication.
Over the last one-and-a-half-years, his condition worsened, and the medicines had terrible side-effects. He could not walk, and was literally crawling and suffering from a cold shoulder, tremors and stiffness in the body. He could hardly sleep and his appetite was bad. Now, he is much better.” His wife said, “I am happy he is eating and sleeping better.” The team of neurospecialists, comprising Dr R Ramanarayan, Dr Yogaraj, Dr Arul Selvan and Dr Chendil Nathan, conducted a month-long series of tests to assess if Arif was fit enough to undergo the surgery.
Dr Yogaraj said: “Not everybody with Parkinson’s can undergo the surgery and see considerable improvement.
We put him on a series of tests to check if he will respond to the treatment and finally decided to go ahead with the surgery. The surgical procedure took about 13 to 14 hours.” Dr Ramnarayan said: “Post surgery, the patient will see a 100 per cent improvement within three months to a year. In the last four days after the surgery, there has been a 70-per cent improvement in MOHD Arif. His appetite has returned, his body is less stiff and he is able to walk. The tremors have decreased and he has also gained good urinary control.”
