Asking for July 29 to be observed as the ‘death sentence day’ for dowry harassment across the world, Justice V R Krishna Iyer, former judge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday said, “The Indian Dowry Prevention Act is still inadequate. Not a single person has been sentenced to death for dowry harassment till date.” He was speaking at a programme 'India Court of Women on Dowry and Related Forms of Violence Against Women — Daughters of Fire', organised by Vimochana and Asian Women’s Human Rights Council in partnership with about 40 women’s organisations from across the country, in collaboration with Centre for Social Action, Christ University and Centre for Women’s Studies, Dharmaram Kshetram. About 25 women and their families from across the country brought to the Court their personal testimonies of pain, survival and resistance.Danseuse Mallika Sarabhai and others were present on the occasion.
