Rainbow Bridge Celebrates Its Centennial

world's largest known natural bridge at 290 meters high and 275 meters wide to celebrate 100 years May 30, 2010. Years before it was designated as a National Monument, Rainbow Bridge was a sacred symbol of the Navajo Indians. Rainbow Bridge, or 'Nonnoshoshi "within the meaning Navajo rainbow turned to stone, is a holy place with a deep spiritual significance for the Navajo People. In Navajo culture personified a rainbow is the guardian of the universe. It symbolizes the gods responsible for the formation of clouds, rainbows, and precipitation, which is essential for life in the desert. Rainbow Bridge is millions of years in the making, from the building of the dunes to extreme climatic changes, hard rock landscape elevator up to the erosion of rivers and washes flowing from the Navajo Mountain to the Colorado River. Its spiritual and cultural significance should be respected and visitors are requested not to go beyond the screen.

14.08.1909 was the day, Rainbow Bridge was officially "discovered" and publicized to the outside world by a dozen men at the University of Utah, a federal study group and local guides. When John Watermill, Bryon Cummings, William Douglas, and the discovery came, they not only want to prove his existence, they also wanted it preserved as a national monument. You can visit by boat to the bridge with only one quarter miles to Three Mile Walk depending on water levels. Today, thousands of people visit the Rainbow Bridge National Monument each year.
